829. George Lafayette7 BARTON (Luke N.6, Stephen5, Edmund4, Samuel3, Matthew2, Edward1)(997) was born in Augusta, Kennebec, ME 05 January 1827. George died 29 June 1909 in Camberwell, Victoria, Australia, at 82 years of age.

He married Elizabeth FORDHAM 04 June 1854 in Portland, Victoria, Australia. Elizabeth was born 22 April 1839 in Litlington, Cambridge, England. Elizabeth was the daughter of Samuel FORDHAM and Mary KEMP. Elizabeth died 11 November 1917 in Queenscliff, Victoria, Australia, at 78 years of age. Arrived in Australia at Portland, Victoria on December 2nd 1852 in the ship Marmion. George was first officer (Engineer) on the vessel which was the same one which brought the Fordham family to Australia. He apparently fell in love with Elizabeth Fordham (passanger list shows her as 12 years old), signing off the Marmion at the end of its voyage and returned to be with her. They waited until she was 15 before they married.

He was appointed assistant lighthouse-keeper at Portland in 1859, progressing to senior lighthouse-keeper on September 1st 1888.

George was mentioned in the Portland "Guardian", March 5,1855 as being on the subscription list of the Presbyterian Church.

child + 1929 v. Fanny BARTON was born 04 December 1865.

child + 1930 vi. Aitchison Grieve BARTON was born 13 April 1869.

child + 1931 vii. Mary Elizabeth BARTON was born 21 September 1871.

child + 1932 viii. Virgil Moore BARTON was born 23 July 1875.
