In 1908 at the birth of daughter Evelyn, the family was living at 18 Dana street in Somerville, MA and George was called an engraver. George was a commercial artist and the founder of Boys Life magazine. The first issue was published 1 January 1911 with a run of 5,000 copies of 8 pages. The more accepted 1st edition was published 1 March 1911 with an expansion to 48 pages of reduced size and a 2 color cover. From the outset, his publishing efforts were opposed by the major publishers who threatened to cut off dealers who sold the new magazine. After four issues George was forced to sell out to Boy Scouts of America on 12 June 1912 for $6,000. He also founded the Lexington, Massachusetts chapter of the DeMolay and was a deacon of the Lexington Episcopal church. In the 1910 census George is a bookkeeper for a publishing firm. The 1920 census found Florence's father and mother and brother and his wife in the household. The crash of '29 apparently devastated the family fortunes and George never fully recovered. Son Lewis was sent to live with his uncle Louis Willard to conserve the meager family resources. His will divided his estate among his three children excepting his books which were to go to (and were refused by) the University of Vermont and his brushes which he left to Florence. At the time of his mother's death in 1916 he was living High Street in Winchester and on Cummings St in Billerica for the 1920 census.
